It may or may not make sense for you to waste time submitting to dozens of directories. Some of the most successful businesses we know are only listed in Yahoo. We are one of them.

More effective methods of marketing a business presence online are through link exchanges with other companies, participation in the Internet community through discussion lists, starting a subscription based newsletter, contributing a free article or content to another site in exchange for a link to yours. Give a little away and you may get a lot in return.
Naturally we're biased but, some well placed publicity or an announcement by the right PR team doesn't hurt either :-)

Alta Vista

Use the hyperlink to visit, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the link to submit your URL. No directories are provided, just fast and convenient searching.

Yahoo

You will need to visit this site and choose your category before you may submit your URL. It may take some time to choose your categories, but, it's important to be listed at Yahoo. Yahoo will allow you to submit to several categories. If you are offering a commercial product or service, check which categories your competitors are in and list in those categories. Check back after two weeks for your listing. If you don't see your listing, e-mail your URL, the category URL in which you want to be listed copied from Yahoo directory, a 20 word unbiased description of your site along with a brief "thank you in advance" style note . This usually gets you listed within a matter of days. Yahoo will edit your description if it sounds hard sell so stick to the facts.

Excite

Use the "Submit Link" button at the bottom of the page to add your site.
The Excite staff may review your site so be as descriptive as possible in the form and make it interesting so they will want to review it. Having a unique or clever title can really pay off at places like Excite!

Infoseek

Use this Infoseek link to submit your URL via e-mail. No descriptive information is necessary.

Lycos

All you will need to do is enter your URL of your main page. Lycos will visit your page, scan the links and be able to retrieve other information contained in your documents. Robot search engines catalog websites based on the text and descriptive keywords contained in your document, META code and hidden fields. A good policy is to resubmit your URL from time to time as you change the content of your pages.

WebCrawler

Owned by America Online, this search vehicle often delivers sites based on how many times the word you are searching appears in the document. Remember AOL is the largest of the online services and subscribers searching the WWW often use Webcrawler. Like Lycos, all you have to do is register your URL. Submit often as your page content changes.

What's New Too

The hyperlink will direct you to the submission page. Choose your category carefully and have a 20-30 word description ready to submit with the other form information. Your announcement gets posted within 36 hours.

TradeWave Galaxy (the old EINet Galaxy)

You may add your link right from a topic page. Like Yahoo, you probably should search through the topics pages to see where like companies are listed and place your listing accordingly.

Inktomi

Inktomi is a search engine that maintains one of the larger databases of documents on the WWW.
The search capability allows you to choose to retrieve up to 100 documents at one time.
